We knew Every Breath You Take was a stalker song back when it was new. People really need to just read the liner notes.

out to be JUST a step father". I, sir am a step parent. If someone EVER called me "just a step father", God have mercy on them. Because I wouldn't. I STEPPED UP and I STEPPED IN. Some of us do actually give a damn.

The irony of Don Henley’s interpretation of Hotel California is priceless, given the fervor he has with making sure NO ONE ever covers his song without paying him everything earned by it. He’s the worst kind of old fogey musician- worth hundreds of millions, yet, when some kid on tiktok or YouTube covers the guitar solo, he slaps a copyright claim/strike on them…. Ugh… well done, Don. Way to keep your music alive.

Our family was around a 🔥. We were talking about 🎶. My oldest son was around 11. He said that my generation had a song about drugs. I asked what tune was he talking about." My Wife Snorts Coke With a Pink Carnation he said. I couldn't figure out this song at ALL. A couple of days later it hit me!!!! The song he was talking about was " A White Sport Coat, and a Pink Carnation" That was a hoot!!! We still have a good laugh about it. He's 57 now and love how he he was so sure of himself!!

The original meaning of a song will never be as important as the listener's interpretation of a song.

Every Breath You Take is obviously a song about stalking. That is why it was my husband and my song. I used to catch him riding by my house all the time and showing up places I was at. I went ahead and married him 40 yrs ago.😁😁 Sting actually wrote it when he was going through a divorce and having a hard time with it.

"You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here." is a line I've heard many times long before Semisonic used it; as a "We-re closed, please leave" signal from bars and other places. I used to go to 1st Ave, the place where many scenes in Prince's Purple Rain movie were filmed. Staff there used it often. I was a regular back in the '80's and they were using it then. So it was only logical on our part to assume they were talking about a bar. Lines like this one: "Closing time, one last call for alcohol So, finish your whiskey or beer" -reinforced that perception.

Jim Steinman wrote Total eclipse of the heart for Meatloaf. Unfortunately Meatloaf wasn't allowed to record any more of Steinmans music at the time because their managers were suing each other so he gave it to Bonnie Tyler

Great vid but it is not really misheard lyrics.. Its just misinterpreted lyrics. Misheard lyrics is when Elton John sings "Hold me closer tiny dancer..." and you hear "Hold me closer Tony Danza..." ^_^

Many people get the mistaken idea that the Alice In Chains song Down in a Hole is about depression brought on by heroin addiction.
Oh wait, that is what it’s about.
Carry on

I think there's plenty more misunderstood lyrics for popular songs out there, you could probably do a whole series on, i'd be interested to watch it certainly.

How about people thinking that the song I will always love you is about romance, Dolly Parton wrote it for her former singing partner Porter Wagoner when she went solo.

REM's Shiny Happy People is often quite misunderstood. According to the band it's a parody of Chinese internal propaganda.
