He didn't want *just* a death. He wanted an epic death, which would be remembered for ages to come. Be it in a grand conflict or something else. Now, if you asked me, plunging from a sky island and making a huge crater just because your body is so large and dying in the process... is more epic than just drowning. And he would make a landmark on that island, which would be remembered as his doing. The story of a yonko who just plunged to death and left a crater with his own body would be something straight out of a fairy tale.

Also, some people say that he wanted to awaken his DF this way. Maybe? But if he died in the process that would accomplish his other life goal.

I think Kaido wanted to go out with a bang. He said that Joyboy would be the person who would defeat him and he has searched for a meaningful death since his battle with Oden was interrupted.

It's less about dying and more about dying a meaningful death that inspires others like Whitebeard and Roger. Jumping off a sky island to your death is much cooler than just drowning
