back with another weird project - this time an entire dress made out of pennies! (and y'all, I really underestimated how many pennies it takes to make a dress 😅)

but that’s all for this week! I’ll be back with more projects soon! :D

thanks for watching! :)

My Grandmother had a woven copper dress. Yes, the whole dress, 20's style short dress made of fine copper thread. It looked so unique, and part of the strap was oxidized to green. I don't know what happened to that dress, but it was the most unique thing I have ever seen.

This literally should have been at the 2021 Met Gala. The couture, the history. Simply amazing!

This beautiful creation deserves to be on display somewhere and the creator recognised for her work. It shimmies, it flows, it's gorgeous ❤

Probably too late for this now, but I'd recommend putting a sheer/nude fabric sort of slip on beneath the dress whenever you wear it, to help your skin not smell like pennies but also to reduce redness from the metal touching your skin. Gotta say I do love the variation of color given by the pennies though, shiny versus the mucky and everything in between. Very cool to look at. You honestly could just display it on a mannequin at a museum if you didn't want to wear it again, I'm sure someone would display it!

She literally just made a $26 dress. And it’s worth every penny!😍

You cannot wear this in Vegas in summer you'd burn your skin off 😬 but indoors or for a quick red carpet walk, this is hella cool. A girl in my high school made a dress entirely out of folded starburst wrappers. Not even gkue, just all folded together. I can't imagine that level of patience but here you are and there she is, so... it exists. And it's impressive as heck

absolute couture
you don't give yourself enough credit
Fashion houses would have a team of 20 people making a dress like this
you're incredible~ thank you for always going that obsessive extra mile

Hi! Since this dress is essentially chainmail, the weight can be relocated from your shoulders to your waist with a belt. you can also make the straps broader. I'd love to see this project continue, and comfort seems to be the number one problem.

I wonder how sparkly it would’ve looked if all the Pennie’s were new and shiny? The dress is so gorgeous even without

THANK YOU SHAY! I WON FIRST PLACE IN A FAIR CONTEST! There were a lot of other people and for me to come in first place was amazing, for anyone asking, no I didn't use any of her designs, I listed to her videos while designing my dress and put it all togther, the dress took me 7 months to finish because I have a lot of school, and I wanted to quit, but Shay, you kept me going and so did my boyfriend. Thank you

If I remember correctly, scale mail was often made with a leather backing so it didn't pinch as much. That is if a warrior didn't already wear a layer of padding anyway. Adding a thin layer of leather or cloth would probably make the dress a little more comfortable and less cold when put on.

I sincerely hope a random celebrity sees this, wants to buy it from you for thousands $$$ and instant "BOOMS" you into fame. This is astronomically amazing!!! like honestly, I need to see this on the red carpet right now!

This takes ‘making a $20 dress’ to a whole new level. It turned out so pretty!

That absolutely needs to be in a fashion museum... and be shown on some big-time runways. Very very cool!

This dress is GORGEOUS!!! Oh my god the fantasy vibes it gives even with the modern silhouette is super cool; though it was probably more work, I think scale mail was definitely the way to go.

Fun fact you're right about on point on how long it used to take to make Chainmail in medieval times.
Around a month and half to two months was the norm for a tailored chainmail.

As someone who makes maille, I am impressed with how quickly you got your dress done! A full suit of armor often takes 50-60 hours to make using either steel or aluminum rings. Someone who was experienced in chain maille could probably make something similar to your dress using only metal, but it would take a good 30-40 hours. If you ever do something similar in the future (I know, it's a crazy amount of work) I recommend using a belt to take the weight of your shoulders, or to wear padding underneath the shoulder pieces. Your work is beautiful, thank you for sharing.

Wasn’t there a coin shortage back then? Guess we finally know where all the pennies went lol. Such a cool dress though! Maybe you could add supports to the waist to help with the weight?
