Duane Allman - Part 4 - Don't Want You No More/It's Not My Cross To Bear
Показать описание
Duane Allman gets a ton of well deserved credit for his incredible slide playing. But truth be told, his conventional playing affected me just as much if not more than his efforts on the slide. The very first time I heard Duane Allman, it was this medley of tunes and it knocked my socks off. I was 14 years old and instantly hooked. (Ed note: special thanks to 106.9 The Fox in Norfolk, VA which played legendary classic rock albums in full on Sundays at midnight.) Duane's playing on the Allman Brothers' debut album is the epitome of good taste and exceptional tone. His string bending in particular had an urgency and even a violence to it that I had never heard before (or since!) Yet it was still incredibly beautiful and graceful; kind of like watching a volcano erupt from a safe distance. Spencer Davis' "Don't Want You No More" was a holdover piece from Dickey Betts' band, The Second Coming. But once the ABB got ahold of it, the song took on a life of it's own. The harmonized twin lead guitars, screaming B3, and double drums announced the arrival of something entirely different and one could make a strong argument that "Southern Rock" started right here. But the Brothers were just getting started. As renowned Texas guitarist David Grissom once said: "If there is a cooler segue than the Allman Brothers' 'Don't Want You No More' into 'It's Not My Cross To Bear,' I haven't heard it. The opening solo is a masterpiece of soul, power, and grace. There are no wasted notes, no noodling - just raw emotion." I couldn't agree more. Check out the tension Duane creates by bending a minor third up to the flat five of the minor IV chord in the segue. But then he releases all that angst by bending up to the major third of the I chord and gets a little help from the amp with some perfectly timed feedback. Absolutely nuts!! Duane is famously associated with 50W Marshalls but my ears tell me this track was cut on a cranked Fender, most likely a Twin. To record this I went straight into GarageBand and messed around with the Blackface Fender model until I got relatively close. Duane might have used a Fuzzface, but I think I got close enough with just the amp. Please comment, I'd love to hear from all the other Duane-heads out there!
