ABOUT THIS VIDEO
When surgeons tell you that they are confident in the effectiveness of their treatments, it's important to look for evidence. Multiple studies that have compared popular orthopedic surgeries to sham surgeries have shown that real and placebo surgeries have similar effects. The only downside? Real surgeries have REAL risks.

I just ordered the book. I’ve been failed time and again by well meaning doctors and surgeons for over thirty years. This has left me at 62 with chronic pain. Ironically, I just watched the old black and white 1950 movie about Dr Semmelweis. I’ve just started PT and I’m combining what I’m taught with exercises I’ve found on your channel. Thank you Matt for all of your great videos and renewing my faith that perhaps I can live, if not pain free, at least get my pain in control.

I appreciate how this information is seriously not reassuring but is delivered in a non shocking way and also how it is on a channel that gives helpful advice and tips🤦🏾‍♂️🙏🏾

This kind of info is no surprise to me at all. Was in medicine for over 31 years. I’ve seen it first hand. I’ve also been in the medical system as a patient. Kudos to these doctors for speaking out. I honestly believe they live in danger.

Thanks for this video. It's good to let people know they have options. My husband once threw his shoulder out and the surgeon insisted that if he didn't have surgery it would just keep popping out of the socket. He was also told he would at best have 70% of his range of motion after the surgery. He went to see a kinesiologist as a second opinion and was given some exercises to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder. That was over 20 years ago and he is great without the surgery.

I found Dr John Sarno’s works many years ago - the mind is the most powerful part of your body. Thank you for this wonderful video x

An honest surgeon offered me a 'BMW' surgery for a meniscus tear. He explained that the surgery would get him a new BMW car and I might get a little short term relief (and would probably be worse in the long term)

as a psychologist, and as any psychologist can tell you, the placebo effect is enourmous - anywhere between 30-100% of the 'therapeutic effect'

I have a labral tear but dont have an impingement to my knowledge. When these studies are compiled is impingement and labral tear just grouped together.

It's really hard to do a real clinical trial on a surgical procedure. So this is very interesting. I'm sure surgery is absolutely necessary some of the time, but orthopedic surgeons rely more on their personal experiences and those of their peers, not on falsifiable evidence of effectiveness.

I was told at 20 years of age that I needed my gallbladder removed. That was 44 years ago. I still have my gallbladder!

The placebo effect is very misunderstood, even by professionals. If placebo has the same effect as surgery, it doesn't mean placebo is a good treatment. It means the surgery is not.
Statistically, the "placebo effect" is mostly regression to the mean, and false (even mistakenly false) patient reporting. Patients are more likely to report that a treatment worked in order to please authority (Doctors). There are many other factors that explain the effect, but the idea of placebo being a mind over matter cure is so pervasive and misunderstood that I'm just spittin in the wind now. 🙃

I have been aware for many years of unnecessary spinal procedures in the USA. In the UK this surgery is rarer because the brakes are applied by the National Health Service being paid for by tax payers. Maybe private practitioners are more keen on invasive surgery?

Balancing out this perspective that a proper diagnosis is key. I thought I had SI Joint and FAI. Turns out I have Grade 1 Spondylolisthesis and might need surgical intervention.

If it’s truly structural surgery and stabilization is an option.
