Demystifying Art:
Sketching or Drawing:

On “Sketch Week” November 2024, Adebanji Alade explained that for him sketches have more vitality as they are created in the moment, at speed. To his mind the fact that less time is taken over a sketch and that it’s inevitably a bit unfinished because of that adds to its artistic merit.

They catch the essence of the thing, the idea, the artist’s response to and the feelings invoked by the thing represented, without being hampered by too much detail. Sketches have been described as more expressive and free than detailed drawings.

Yes, my sketch of the Sandcastle Ball Run Competition at Trearddur Bay has lots of movement and fun in it, but I’d say my drawing of my mum-in-law’s magnolia tree in Stockton Heath, which took many hours of precise and detailed work, and I’d say has the polish of a finished piece, still retains just as much life, just expressed in a more considered way.
