Before and After function are helpful when you want move back and forth among the columns. It has been helpful and many scenarios to achieve the required calculation and most helpful that I have seen is a quarter over quarter (QoQ) or year over year (YoY) calculation.

before() after() and above() below() seem like they are doing the same functionality. can u pls explain the difference ?
