Note that Le Cunn summarizes statistics vs. control theory and operarations research on his first slide. This is not new. It is a well known approach in many sciences. We have not forgotten that, in fact every first year engineering students learns that. Many applications use it, and have done so for years. For example ABS, GPS, auto pilots in airplanes, logistics planning, financial trading etc. etc.
