In the 1920's, the two major powers in China- The Kuomintang (KMT) government of the Republic of China, and the Chinese Communist Party, teamed up to fight warlords in the country- this was called the First United Front. But each had their own interests, and eventually, as the right-wing of the KMT grew in power, the KMT began a violent purge of the Communists from areas under its control. This started a civil war which (with a notable pause which we get into in this video!) lasted all the way through World War II and Japan's invasion of China, until 1949 when the Chinese Communist Revolution forced the leadership of the KMT out of China to...

... you guessed it, Taiwan.
