Elliott Smith was only around for a relatively short time before his untimely passing, but he made a big impact in the alternative music scene, and he still has a loyal and significant following today .. You just happen to find the greatest singer songwriter of all time. Thankfully he put out 5 wonderful albums before he passes, plus the one he was working on and 3 more with his band Heatmiser. Watch the film, Good Will Hunting. Most of the songs in it are from him, he blew up after that and was dead 5 years later. He’s my favorite artist, check out the song King’s Crossing.

Figure 8 is the most "english" album of Elliott Smith, parts of it were recorded in Abbey Road, and there are some words which are pronounced with a brit accent ("time" for ex) so it's not absurd for you to guess he was english. Anyway he was a truly beautiful songwriter and a complicated mind.

One of the few composers to match the Beatles level of out put. From 1994-2003, he released an unbelievable amount of music, recording double what was necessary for every album. And even then, there’s an enormous amount of unreleased music you can get on the eight disc “Grand Mal” compilation.

A portland legend though he was born elsewhere and lived out his last days in LA. My cousin Leslie did sound engineering for some of his earliest material. She was sick when we lost him and I never knew him but it was a major loss. Such an intricate guitar style and a very coherent vision for what he did though it was not samey at all. RIP. My favorite album is Either Or, though the posthumous album from a basement on a hill that was finished by friends is also really good if not necessarily smith’s original intent for the songs.

A really talented and troubled songwriter who often wore his influences on his sleeve but melded them with his inimitable lyrics to sound like no one else I've heard. The beauty and pathos in some of his music is superb. The official story is that he stabbed himself to death, twice in the heart but naturally there have always been big questions over it.
Try "Miss Misery", "Oh, Well OK", "Between the Bars" and "Angeles" .

The best songwriter of my generation, and a heavily underrated musician as well. His catalogue of released and unreleased music is actually huge - he was quite prolific - and the quality of that catalogue doesn't very much at all. It's all ridiculously good. You could support an entire channel for years just reviewing Elliott Smith songs and they'd all be worth the attention.

Great vid. Phenomenal singer/songwriter. I remember when this song dropped, I was 13 at the time so I couldn't watch him live, then when I heard his passing on KROQ it made me sad. A few years back, I drove by the city of Silverlake and took a photo with the muriel of the cover art of "Figure". Felt happy yet sad simultaneously. Good job bruv and keep up the good work!

Son of Sam was the nickname of serial killer, David Berkowitz, who primarily targeted couples in parked cars. When Elliott sings "the couple killer, each and every time" and "I'm a little like you, more like Son of Sam", it suggests that he destroys ('kills') every romantic relationship he has.
That's always been my take on it.

My cat will wake up in another room and come find me if I’m listening to “Angeles” or “pitseleh” and makes sure I’m not super depressed. It’s so cute that if I am depressed, it makes me laugh at how sweet she is
