Russia will always support Syria because they have a naval base there and because of the Montreux Convention it cannot move its naval forces in the Baltic Sea into the Black Sea. Consequently, this naval base in Syria allows it to have a presence in the Mediterranean Sea during a time of war. On a different topic The US A does not have any battleships in service. What they moved two in the eastern Mediterranean was aircraft carriers.
