Conventionally, the US is very effective and would beat Iran. The problem comes in what happens after. Insurgent warfare has proven to be difficult for modern militaries across the world, and it's even more difficult when it's a nation operating in foreign territory like Afghanistan. A lot of these issues come from occupation tactics with no intent to actually stay. The enemy knows they just need to survive long enough, and you'll eventually leave hence why the Taliban won in Afghanistan despite being clobbered by coalition forces at almost every turn. They don't need to win decisive battles, they just simply need to outlive the desire of its occupiers.

So, what needs to be asked is what is the point of the war? If the US is just going to occupy and nation build, it'll fail. If the US and Iran just squared off in a Desert Storm like scenario, Iran doesn't stand a chance. If the US intended to invade and actually conquer, that would be a whole different kind of situation of which we don't have much of a modern precedent for.

America would clap up Iran, dont even play. America IS the master of war. You can love or hate America all you want, but who do you think all the other countries model their militarys after? Whether its structure, tactics, or weaponry, the world looks to America.

I'm not saying other countries can't inflict damage. The U.S. however, appears to have permanent empire status and can wage multiple wars on multiple fronts all over the globe very quickly, unilaterally. It's not that the U.S. can't be defeated, it just appears highly unlikely. I truly believe that if the U.S. takes off the gloves militarily, they would put on a masterclass in modern combined arms warfare.
