IMO TK's strength is also his flaw and it is demonstrated here. He thinks too much into the future and is already planning the what ifs and escape routes without knowing for certain if his dad has it (and even if Owen had it it wouldn’t have meant he had it). I can easily see how someone like TK can turn to drugs to stop his mind from spiralling or ask Alex to marry him to change their path or run out on Carlos when Carlos cooked for him at the start etc because his mind was already seeing different scenarios of the future. When Carlitos said he knew they were soulmates from the first night TK replied "why do you think I ran away'. TK may come across as more happy go lucky than Carlos the control freak but that's on the surface.

I think truthfully speaking, TK was actually staying up late, waiting for Carlos to come home to tell him the bad news and let him know that he himself, does not expect anything from Carlos and if they are going to get married and be together, TK does not want Carlos to help him with the difficulties come like taking him to the bathroom, wash him, help him to eat etc. I think what TK is most upset and afraid of is not remembering Carlos and not knowing he is his boyfriend; he becomes scared in that aspect.
