Growing water spinach is very popular as a vegetable, especially in the Southeast Asian region. It is very popular in the Southeast Asian cooking, and it has a nutty flavor similar to spinach. Water spinach grow rapidly and they are among the very fast growing vegetables.

By the way this is the 26th episode in the new video series of gardening vlogs for 2020 by young gardener Aiman. Unlike the previous episodes which showcased the tour of the home garden on a periodic basis, the next few episodes will exclusively deal with individual plants, vegetables, herbs, berries, shrubs and fruit trees.

Aiman has done several videos on Kangkong over the past several years. Here are some of the those videos on his youtube channel:

Those who have never tried it would have no idea that water spinach was so ridiculously tasty raw or cooked, as well as incredibly easy to digest. Unlike many vegetables, not only are the leaves tasty, but the stems are even better, possessing a unique, somewhat salty taste that's absolutely delicious. The stems are hollow, not very fiberous, and easy to chew and digest raw.

One of the reasons so few people will know what you're talking about when you bring up water spinach is that it goes by so many different names in English. The botanical name for it is Ipomoea Aquatica. It's is a semiaquatic, tropical plant grown as a vegetable for its tender shoots and leaves. It is found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, although it is not known where it originated. This plant is known in English as water spinach, river spinach, water morning glory, water convolvulus, or by the more ambiguous names Chinese spinach, Chinese Watercress, Chinese convolvulus, swamp cabbage or kangkong in Southeast Asia. Occasionally, it has also been mistakenly called "kale" in English, although kale is a strain of mustard belonging to the species Brassica oleracea and is completely unrelated to water spinach, which is a species of morning glory. It is known as phak bung in Thai and Laotian, eng chai in Teochew and Hokkien, ong choy (蕹菜) in Cantonese, kongxincai (空心菜) in Mandarin Chinese, rau muống in Vietnamese, kangkong in Tagalog, gazun in Myanmar, trokuon (ត្រកួន) in Khmer, kolmou xak in Assamese, kalmi saag in Hindi, kalmi shak in Bengali, Thooti Koora in Telugu, kangkung in Indonesian, Malay and Sinhalese and hayoyo in Ghana. In Suriname (South-America) it's known as dagoeblad or dagublad.

During the 15th century, Malaysia's legendary warrior Hang Tuah used kangkung in order to "deceive" the emperor of China to allow him to look directly at the emperor's face which was forbidden at that time.

Here are some of the other interesting facts about Kangkung:

1. Kangkung has mild laxative properties that can be used to treat indigestion and constipation.
2. Eating lots of Kangkung can reduce cholesterol levels, prevent cancer and improve eye health.
3. In Indonesia however, it is considered a taboo to serve Kangkung to honoured guests.

Stay tune for Episode 27 coming up soon...

how about a harvest and cook video? as in, you harvest and you cook. doesn't have to be a big amount of food, just for you to practice cooking for yourself if you ever have to live independently when you go to college.
