4 New Watches That Herald Grand Seiko’s Dressy Revolution

One of the strongest themes in Grand Seiko’s Basel 2019 showing was the pivot to dressy, slightly thinner pieces. We saw two new movements (both mechanical and Spring Drive) cased in a range of (typically gorgeous) new models. And while Grand Seiko’s design hallmarks are there — namely in the exceptional dials and the quality of finish — there were a few elements that set a significant new tone for the brand, particularly the thinner, more ergonomic case profiles, and manually wound movements. It’s a strong start, and it’s also just that — a start. We’re going to see lots more of these watches in the future …

I just picked up the SBGM235 (20th anniversary “mosaic” dial). LOVE it.

Of these four, I would go with the rose gold and crimson dial...no question.

I preordered the GS SBGY003. Love the smaller case size, the sun ray silver dial, and the blue seconds hand. Also love that it’s limited to 700 pieces worldwide.

I bought the sbgy003 and sbgk005. The finishing and decorations on the 9R31 is very impressive for an entry level. It uses the same dual main spring architecture as the higher tier 9R02, though, the power reserve is lesser at 72 hrs vs 84 hrs. This is an improvement to the 7R14 used the eichii II. Will get one of the 9R02 when they are cased in steel. It's also thinner and better finished than its predecessor 9R14. As for the 9S63, it's definitely of higher specs than the patek small second.
