my favorite German Christmas drink

The Recipe 🎄🔥

750ml red wine (1 bottle)
3 cinnamon sticks
6 cloves
4 anise seeds
4 cardamom pods
3 oranges*
1 lemon
Rum (over 50% alcohol content)
2 sugar cubes per person 

Prepare the wine:

Pour the wine into a saucepan with all of the spices. Cut 4 orange and 2 lemon slices and put it in the pot. Squeeze the rest of the orange juice with half of a lemon into the wine. Heat for at least 10-15 minutes but do not let it boil. 

Assemble the drink:

Once the wine is done, strain the wine or pick out all of the spices. Pour it into cups leaving around 3cm of space. Use a fork or other stainless steel thing on top of the cup. Place 2 sugar cubes, soak them with rum and set it on fire. Once it's done burning, mix the remaining sugar into the drink. Enjoy! 


*The amount of oranges depends on how sweet or strong you like your drink. Add less if you like the wine flavour to be more prominent.

My family is from Frankenberg and this wine was the first time I was ever tipsy lol. In our culture it's normal to let high school age have a little wine. It was Christmas and my mom gave me a small cup and I snuck one more. I ended up falling up the stairs and my dad carried me to my bed. 😂 I have never had more than one since then!
