What a wonderful movie and great acting by Paul Muni and Claude Rains. The people these days certainly do not know how to make this caliber of movies anymore.

Great classic fantasy film with a superb cast. Paul Muni (1895-1967), who vowed after his role in "Scarface" (1932) never to play a gangster again, came back on it when he took this double part playing a gangster and judge. It's a shame that the very shy Muni, who never felt at ease in Hollywood, would only make two more movies after this one. One of my favorite actors, Claude Rains (1889-1967), has some kind of a reprise of his role in "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941), although in that one he did his help from heaven and does as always a perfect acting job. Director Archie Mayo (1891-1968) was known for his many brushes with big stars on the set and on this production he clashed many times with Paul Muni. This was Mayo's final movie as a director. This was also the last movie for Hardie Albright (1903-1975), who from then only worked for television. Beautiful score by top-composer Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979). This classic movie fell into the public domain in 1973, so the prints available varies in quality. Almost needless to say that you find a perfect one right here, at Cinema4Reel.
