I wish people would understand that he didn’t just “hold back”, he quite literally scripted the entire fight to perfection which is far more impressive. I especially love how at the beginning of the fight they show us just how degraded itachi’s vision is as well. And as we all know, he was also plagued with his terminal illness. Despite this he was still able to give Sasuke a fight in which he never once tried to actually hurt him while still giving the illusion that it was a fight to the death all so Sasuke could arise as a hero. He even made sure to draw out and seal orochimaru to free sasuke from his curse mark. Went as far as to give him some of his power to further protect Sasuke from Madara(Tobi/Obito) - unfortunately, as we know, itachi didn’t realize obito had a surplus of sharingans so he could easily employ izanagi without actually sacrificing his true eye. In conclusion it really is a shame we never got to see him at full power actually trying but still one of my favorite scenes.

I find this fight vaguely humorous in retrospect, almost like Itachi sees it a little like playing ninja with his little brother one last time by letting him win while playing up the "muahahaha you can't defeat me I'm going to steal your eyes" super-villain schtick

The opening line is one of the most profound statements made in the entire series, and it is so slept on. Everything Sasuke believed to be true was basically an illusion (or genjutsu) caused by politics and a cruel world, and itachi was trying to see if he had realized that or not.
