This is a quick description of the difference and cost of deploying stereo backing tracks.
Mixer is the UI24R - $1100
Audio Interface is the UMC1820 - $170 (for the UMC404 at least)
In Ear Monitors (IEM) are Behringer P2 $40
iPad Air First Gen 128gb Storage $170

Cool video! I love to see how other people come up with solutions. My first thought is that the interface isn't really necessary; you can plug the USB from the iPad directly into your digital mixer. In my case, it's an XR18.
My second thought is (30+ years playing live) I really don't get the stereo thing. Sure, it sounds great if I'm wearing headphones or in a car, or in the middle of the back of the room where the sound guy is. But most people are sitting all over the room, left, right, and center. Why would I want someone on the left side of the room to hear something different than someone sitting on the right side?

Superb tutorial John! Just getting up & running with a UI24. This was a big help routing wise.

Very, very, very helpful video! I am just working on how to set the click track along with stereo BT. I also have a UI24 and now at least I have a clue on the issue.
Thanks s lot from Russia!

This is a great video, you're a man after my own heart, pretty much everything you said here I agree with. I too run a band, I do (mostly) my own tracks and have ran them in stereo for years. So many bands on the circuit (if not all of them) run the click left, track right way via a phone or iPad. And that's fine, it's certainly the easiest way to do it. But being a bit of a sound nerd, with my band it had to be stereo. And so many bands that have come and seen us compliment on how good it sounds. More often than not they ask "how do you get your tracks sounding so good"
My kit (Pearl Mimic Pro) goes in stereo and I prefer the guitar to go in stereo too if possible.
I like your choice of desk too, I wanted one of these when my x18air went down recently. But no one had them in stock, time was of the essence and I ended up with an Allen And Heath QuPac... which is decent too, very nice sounding desk, but has a few things lacking which bug me. These are just a few:
1. No multi band comp (for FOH) I use this on the X18 and it really helps tighten the whole mix up.
2. USB ins are 1 to 1. i.e. I can't route USB out 1 and 2 to say, channels 7 and 8... has to be into 1 and 2. the X18 could... QuPac can't.
3. 6 character limit on channel/buss labelling, a minor point.. but why?!?
4. No RTA on channel or any eq view. You have to PAFL the buss, go out into Home, then RTA... but of course, to adjust to have to go back... X18 could, Ui24 can also, QuPac can't!
5. Aux outputs are fixed as mono or stereo.

I use a Motu Ultrawide soundmodule. 8 in, 8 out, plus 2 main out. I run all songs in Reason 8. I make 8 mix busses on the mixer and sends it to the front of hous with Drums 1 and 2 (stereo), Bass 3, Keys 4, Guitars 5, pads 6, effects 7 and vocals on chanel 8. This way the sound engineer can do his mix to fit the venue. This is so The Master Chanel in Reason is going out to our "in ear" (monitor). This way we can sent only the chanels that we want (need) AND we can add the click (if we need it) to the Master Chanel too. Some times we record commands to the master. Cue notes, count ins or the first words of the lyrics, to support us playing. Works great....

My tracks have a lot of production. I always run them in stereo. Running them in mono has a muddying effect.

Thanks for this helpful video. I don't own the UI24R but collected some infos about it and other mixers for a future buy. From the specs, it seems that the UI24R can be used as a 32x32 USB audio interface (record/play), and from the demo software on their website, it seems possible to patch USB DAW-channels 1-16 and 17-32 to the UI24R input channels. Did you experiment that solution instead of having to use an external audio interface ? I guess you could connect your laptop directly to the UI24R and redirect your 4 tracks (stereo backing track + bass + click) to input channels of your choice on the mixer. But again, that's what I understand from testing the demo software. Is it indeed possible ?

All you need is the ui24r for this it already has usb and a player internally also the ui sells for about 600 b stocked

Why not use one of the 32 DAW channels from UI24 and not have a second interface? Not sure of why this isn't all done within the UI24r?

I am trying to copy your output outing from my iPad (running Multitracker) to my Behringer U-Phoria 404HD but Multitracker does not recognize the Behringer. I have tried directly plugging a lightning-USB 2.0 B and have also used the Apple lightning-USB A adapter to then plug a USB A-USB 2.0 B cable and MT never recognizes the U-Phoria. I have also plugged directly into my Mackie DL32S using the same cabling scheme. Some times MT recognizes the Mackie, sometimes not but it is always glitchy. Any thoughts? Thanks

John, you have one musician per aux send for monitors. Each aux send is mono! Your P2 monitors are mono!

Is there a reason why you aren't using the UI24r as a digital interface? You don't need the Behrigner. The UI24r is 32x32 digital audio interface. Also, is there a reason you're not using Qlabs for playback? With the Pro Audio Version of Qlabs, which isn't that much more than the Behringer interface (Plus it can be triggered via an iPad or an iPhone), you can 32 discreet outputs into the Soundcraft. There are easier ways to do what you need for less money.

Thanks for the video! Question: How do you assign outputs within the interface when using an ipad via usb?

You could eliminate the additional soundcard, run your backtracks via Soundcraft UI24R usb.
