Live-streamed on August 5, 2024

Sam speaks with Dana Fisher, director of the Center for Environment, Community, & Equity and professor in the School of International Service at American University, to discuss her recent book Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action.

Professor Dana Fisher then joins, diving right into the astounding failure of the last few decades of the West’s attempt to “handle” the climate crisis, the acknowledgment of the politics of climate change alongside the refusal to acknowledge the expansive social and economic reforms needed to address it, and the major divide in who has contributed to (and is affected by) climate change.

To the people saying we have run out of time: what does that mean? Are you implying that there is nothing left to do?

Yes, the climate predictions are dreadful, and there's a high likelihood that it is too late to avoid triggering many feedback loops. Hell, it is already too late for the millions of people who have died from air pollution, climate change-related disasters and other consequences of the dominant economic and political system on Earth. And even if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today, the situation wouldn't improve for the foreseeable future. But does succumbing to doomerism (as big oil companies want us to) make anything better? Every hundredth of a degree counts. People have got to stop that black and white thinking where we either stop climate change like superheroes defeating a villain or plunge into an irremediable apocalypse. Very few people living through a war, a famine or a disaster just sit there and think it's too late.

I am under no illusions that a government or a technology will stop the downward trend we are on. I think change can only come from the bottom up, by organizing within and between our communities to create societies that are adapted to future conditions while also preventing further ecological damage.

Yes, the task ahead of us is tremendous and has never been seen in history. In spite of that, we have to act and hope. Or rather, because of that, we have to act and hope.

We have no other choice.

The time to start fixing the climate was the 70s and 80s. It's already too late.

Epic fail by humanity. This will go down the history books. Many generations will wonder what the hell was wrong with people who had the knowledge and chance to do something about it.

50% of human additional atmospheric CO2 has been released since 1990. We are toast.

The best part is that there are things that the every day human can do. Like not take their private jet to work or go on a cruise.

There will be NO climate action as too many people want more, NOT less, and the population of people on the planet is way over capacity!
As people increase their lifestyle, they will consume more, use more, and want more. In many developing countries, they are doing just that... developing! India, African countries, and South American countries.

It's obvious that we need both individual responses and systemic responses. One of the things the "system" needs to do is figure out how we can have an economy that isn't completely growth oriented. This is a huge problem. Most people don't want to confront it, and liberals will talk around it all day because it's almost impossible to stay in office if you confront it directly.
