I feel like there should definitly be a seperation of creator vs character, the charcter is what's in the fanfiction and fan art, while the creator doesn't need to see all the fanfics or fan art, and is completely seperate from that

The main thing that came to mind was Markiplier and Jacksepticeye shippers. Driving them apart and making things weird between them, and even threatening their girlfriends since these fangirls could only see Mark and Sean with each other. It was gross to witness real life people being told they were wrong for not being gay like everyone wanted

Shipping real people and making fanfics about them has always made me a bit uncomfortable for this very reason, because I know that even if some do it for harmless fantasy and fun, it's still projecting personalities, beliefs and thoughts onto real individuals and treating them like fictional characters, molding them to fit into certain tastes and ideas.
And the danger is that when people latch onto those ideas, it can begin to color how they perceive the real humans they're basing off of. That can lead to a lot of disappointment, if not anger, when the actual person goes against the assumptions about them.

shipping, even real people, isn't automatically bad imo. what is bad is when the fans start shoving it in the people's faces, and doing weird things. as long as it stays to fanfic/fanart spaces only, i have nothing against rpf. (also, a lot of people who write/read rpf stuff make the distinction between content creator X character)
