Cape Town's public transport system has been paralyzed by a minibus taxi strike that in a violent turn has seen five people killed, according to a statement by the South African Ministry of Police Tuesday.
"Any taxi strike like this, that drags on days on end is going to be very damaging to our economy and to the tourism economy in particular,” said the city's mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Minibus taxi operator organizations are in a stalemate with the Cape Town government after failing to resolve various grievances, including that of impounding taxis the government claims are unroadworthy.
