Leveraging PURE data into Analytics with Power BI | #PRCN2023

PURE System @ Lingnan University (LU) (aka Lingnan Scholars) has proven to be an invaluable tool to demonstrate University’s research landscape since its first launch in 2019. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is conducted once every 6 years by Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee to evaluate vigorously the research performance of all the 8 universities under its funding. In this increasingly complex and competitive research environment, it is the library’s strategic goal to support the upcoming RAE in 2026. To prepare for this, University’s management is demanding for more in-depth understanding towards research activities and impact to inform decision-making on proper research strategies. There is a pressing need to transform PURE data into actionable insights that optimize such informed decision-making processes.

This presentation chronicles LU Library’s recent attempts to leverage PURE data with Microsoft Power BI, a powerful business intelligence tool, to visualize interactive analytics to support preliminary review for RAE. The process involves careful crafting of research-related information data in PURE, and scaling them into narrative analytics via Power BI where stakeholders across campus can derive insights about patterns, trends, and gaps in research activities undertaken at LU. Our ultimate goal is to empowering PURE data with capability to inform decision-making on research management in different contexts.
