Taiwan elected Lai Ching-Te also known as William Lai to be the self-governed island’s next President. President Lai took oath in Taipei along with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim. Lai’s election to office has angered China and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Just after the swearing-in ceremony of the Taiwanese President, Beijing launched large-scale two-day military drills around Taiwan. China send over 40 warships along with 111 aircraft including J-10, J-11, and H-6 long-range bombers to surround Taiwan. Meanwhile, the island responded with its military as F-16 and Mirage-2000 jets monitored Chinese activity. Now, coming in support of Taiwan were Japan and the United States. President Joe Biden even sent a senior lawmaker to Taiwan to reaffirm American support to Taiwan.
