That is true. I know he's talking about romantic relationships but it's true about any kind of relationship.
Me and my dad loved each other to death, but we didn't have a good relationship because out moral values were extremely different.
My mom is my best friend and we fight a lot because our lifestyle don't match (she lives with me).
And I have had friends that I loved and cared about a lot but it wasn't enough. Our differences in thinking and interpreting the world led us to drift apart.

Just love is not enough. There has to be emotional intelligence, a willingness to work on the relationship when things gets rough, a willingness to see the other side's point of view, where they are coming from, a firm intention to not let your ego blind you (like taking personally perceived offenses, when sometimes the other person didn't mean it at all; or a willingness to resolve the differences and work on letting go of intentional offenses, like in a fight where people will say things that hurt in the heat of the moment and later regret it but the other part is unwilling to talk about it or let it go, etc etc).

Love is enough, it's just that people forget to love from time to time and in those times the worst things can happen and it creates an irrepairable situation.

A lesson learned advice from my dad when I was younger. So he says, in order for you to get married and have a successful marriage. You have to be friends with your spouse before Getting married, this is the person you're gonna spend the rest of your life with, they'd better be your best friend, the one that has your back, the 1 that I'll never lie to you, steal from you and talk s*** behind your back, make up illicit Krumer's to tell people in the neighborhood.
