YES they do nowadays.
One of my colleague was on bench for month,
RMG said find a project or we will share your profile to HR and HR wil give you 2 week notice for volunteering resignation.

One friend didn't receive a pay after sitting 6 months on bench

I have been on the bench for more than 6 months and I'm not reporting to tcs RMG and then i got mail from them saying that they will recover my salary which i have got while on bench, will they do that.
