In this Q&A-style video, teachers Mark and Pierre-Benoît from Coffee Break French answer learner Rachel's question about when to use the time phrases "depuis" and "pendant". We'll take a look at some examples which show these two similar words in context, and we'll be able to differentiate them by the end of the video.

Here are the phrases included in this video:
• Je joue au basket depuis 3 ans.
• J'ai joué au basket pendant 3 ans.
• J'étudie l'espagnol depuis 5 ans.
• J'ai étudié l'espagnol pendant 5 ans.

Make sure you watch the full video to hear a full explanation about how to use these phrases. We've provided subtitles in English which can be turned on using the Subtitles/CC button.

It might also help to think of 'pendant' as 'during' instead of 'for'. For example, 'I played basketball during (some) 3 years in the past'. It's not the best English, but it does help me personally, since 'for' is typically 'pour'

In this context they are not words. They are verbs.
