On the low volume during your video call; the Mecool Now has volume control for its internal speaker controlled separately from your T.V. volume via the Mecool Now remote. Could be the call audio was coming from the Mecool Now rather than from you television set and the Mecool Now's volume was too low.

Heard you couldn't install apks or third party apks more or less. From other than the playstore. Is this true?
