Cobra 139XLR Repair Tips & Tricks

The Cobra 139XLR was the grandfather to the 142GTL. It is an early Uniden u858 PLL radio. This is the same board as the 138XLR, original President Washington & Grant, Teaberry 202, Robyn 505D/520D, Realistic TRC-449/450/457/458 and many others. These were made from late 1976 to 1979. The FCC cracked down on these very quickly due to ease of channel mods (up to 399), and the speech clipper circuit, which is an early form of a speech processor. From a shout to a whisper, it holding the stock microphone a foot away... It would always achieve 100% AM modulation and was very punchy on SSB.

In this video I go over the most common problems and remedies. This is not a full restoration video like I usually try to do. But this is more of a down and dirty quick repair tips to get you back on the air.

Tip I was given about the audio in the Realistic TRC-449 boxes: Where D23 should be is a 220 Ohm resistor. Replace it with a 1N914 diode. Replace C87 (2uf/25V) with a 10uf/35 volt electrolytic. This will make the limiter the same as the other 858 models. Just throwing that out there since you mentioned the Realistic 858 chassis audio being, shall we say, not quite up to par.
