The purpose of the open fenders on the LMP3 car is to allow air build up underneath the car to escape in order to prevent the car from lifting off the ground like an airplane during high speeds flipping over and crashing into the trees. Its happened a number of times to cars that did not have them on Nordschliefe and Circuit De La Sarthe in Le Mans France such the Mercedes CLRs back in 1999. The cars flew off the track.
