Whence 'bear'? Haven't you always wanted to know how it is that 'bear' as in 'bear with me' and 'bear' as in 'polar bear' sound the same? Where do furry bears come from? What's the deal?

The scientific name for the grizzly bear is actually "Ursus arctos", or "BEAR BEAR!"

My favorite word is flange.
Bears however are my favorite animal and the one I most closely identify with personally.

Oof. You are correct - I am in error. It looks like the Antarctic is the ant-arctic because it's the antipodal point to the Zone Near The Bear Constellations.

It's not 100% incorrect, though, because you can't see Ursa Major or Minor in the Southern Hemisphere, and there aren't any polar bears in the South Pole. But yes, good eye! I apologize for the error.

I guess I just really wanted to draw a polar bear eating a Christmas elf.

Words have power and spells were mighty back in the day. And it wasn't the greek pronunciation which was taboo. It was the word the germanic tribes used which became taboo.

Don Ringe in _From Proto-Indo-European to Proto-Germanic_ thinks the etymon is, less excitingly, "*ǵʰwér- 'wild animal'. (cf. Gk θήρ, Lith. žveris; Lat. ferus 'wild')."

"This Germanic word is usually said to reflect a root *bʰer- 'brown'; but while that is plausible semantically (in light of later, parallel developments in various languages), an actual PIE word of that shape and meaning is not recoverable, whereas 'wild animal' is securely reconstructable."

All those gl words referring to light or sight: glint, gleam, glitter, glow….etc

Nice video. Although I'm not convinced that arctic takes its name from the presence of bears in the region, but rather for the direction (north) which is indicated by Polaris, part of the Ursa Maior constellation. Also, ant-/anti- from ant-arctic likely means "on the opposite side to", compared to a-/an- which signals a negation. It would have been called anarctic.

Etymology:
Through the fusion of the moon and the sun, light (seed, child, spirit, life) is born, and the seeds of the spirit descend on the ground. This is the etymological meaning of all languages in the world.

The 《bear's etymology》 means that she is pregnant with a bird's egg. This is an ancient Korean story. In other words, the symbol of a pregnant woman is a bear. A bear is like the moon that holds the seeds of the sun.

My friend's middle name is Orsella - lil' bear. Also pretty far distant from that Proto-Indo-European word.

I wonder... does the name "Arthur" also come from the *h₂ŕ̥tḱos root? (awesome video btw!)

Huh? Garcia means little bear. I assume it is a reference to Ursa Minor but this adds another layer.

One of my middle names is Oso. That's a long, long way from *h₂ŕ̥tḱos.

Why would the Greek pronunciation be taboo? How and why would such an idea propagate through Germanic tribes? Is deer related to the word for tan? So many questions and the video ends.

That's why i love brown bears. It's a brown brown.
Oh and you have a little mistake in your presentation as far as I know. The arctics name derived from the zodiac, not from the animal.
