LYRICS
Words by Marlon Williams and KOMMI

Ko au anake
Ki te waka,
Ki te moana
Kāore kau he matangi
Kāore he aha nei

Titiro mai
Titiro mai!
Te ama!
Ka tāuke atu nei
Aua atu rā

Ka mate au ki te moana mārie
Kāore ōku tūmanako
Kāore he aha nei

Anana e
Anana e!
Te ama!
Ka tāuke atu nei
Aua atu rā

E kore au e hoki anō ki a koe
Kāore e hoki anō ki tō kainga ē
E kore au e hoki anō ki a koe
Kāore e hoki anō ki tō kainga ē

Ko au anake
Ki te waka,
Ki te moana
Kāore kau he matangi
Kāore he aha nei

Aroha mai
Aroha mai!
Te ama!
Ka tāuke atu nei
Aua atu rā

This encapsulates everything I love so deeply about Marlon Williams’ music, the exquisite melancholy and beautiful despair combined with all the charm, style, wit and humour. Existential dread and resignation has never seemed so attractive.

Elvis reborn as a Maori boy. But seriously this has all the elements of great cinema. I love the qualities Marlon you incorporate into your art that do take stylistic narratives from a variety of influences and caste it through a Maori worldview. An evolution that would make all our tipuna might proud.

Beautiful waiata, brought a tear to my eyes reminiscing as a child listening to my poppa, nana, mum, aunties, uncles singing and partying in the garage back in the 80s/90s, all sadly now passed on, thank you for the memory and keeping te Maori culture alive and thriving

The chorus in this song is so deep and beautiful. I liked Marlon's other songs, but this new album and sound is something else 🙏

So awesome to see this pop up on ABC media. As an Aussie I lived in NZ for over 15 years and have a love for the culture there.

In case anyone was curious...per Google translate....

I am alone
To the canoe,
To the sea
There is no wind
It is nothing

Look at me
Look at me!
The mast!
I am going away
Away

I will die in the calm sea
I have no hopes
It is nothing

Anana e
Anana e!
The mast!
I am going away
Away

I will never return to you again
I will never return to your home again
I will never return to you again
I am alone
To the canoe,
To the sea
There is no wind
It is nothing

Love me
Love me!
The mast!
I am going away
Away

Breathtaking song and video. I’ve been a fan of Marlon for years, and I think this song is my absolute favorite. I’m not Māori, but I felt this song in my soul.

I love when things are sung in a language I can't understand, adds to the beauty and Marlin ooozes beautiful music.

when i saw this song live last year with my whānau, i rushed home to find any recording of it as me and my brother wanted to add it to our waiata list. when i realised it had never been officially released, i used my shaky te reo to transcribe the song for my younger brother to learn on guitar just by listening to the recordings uploaded to youtube. finally i will have the true lyrics haha ♥️

I felt so completely frozen and captivated by this music video. The details, the vocals, the story, the weird sensation of knowing that I am never going to get to re-experience the feeling of listening to this for the first time. wow.
