DEFENDER II - on the Atari 2600. Published by Atari in 1984. Based on the arcade coin-op from 1981. A retro classic! :oD

As usual, it's not about perfect game play, but easing stress, having some fun and seeing what the game would have felt like on your first or second go.

Love this, I just played this not long ago too, played a lot of versions of Defenda, its great but sure some other versions are a bit better colours etc. I could never get off level 2😁, its a solid game to play!.
But a pure arcade classic Nick!

this is a impressive game for the 2600, is push things to the limits, i think it had some custom chips in the cart, to give it more gaming power, loved the video mate, played this a bit back it is a fun game, Thanks for the upload mate :o)

This is a very playable version, and one of my favourite games for the Atari VCS.
Back in the day I played 'Invasion of the Body Snatchas' on the ZX Spectrum. That one is worth trying out too. It's not as easy as Defender II though, and it lacks sound, unless you can attach a Fuller Box ( or emulate it ). IOTBS has one of the best explosion effects on the Speccy,

Looks fun! There's a lot of debate on the laser pointer forum about brown lasers....

What a great game. Don’t think I ever got past wave two either though.

The colour pallet you mention the brown instead of red, it is likely you're running the PAL version. You are correct about the second joystick it is needed, not only smart bombs but for hyperspace too, you can jump to the kidnapped humans and have a better chance of saving them. Btw that Defender Ii splash screen, not seen that before, usually get red Stargate logo, in a similar vertically descending pattern. Great game gets very fast in later levels.

I have reached until level 20 when I was a kid and I never found infront the enemy dynamis presented in the manual. But I have managed to defeat all other enemies. The only thing to do is look at the radar screen. When you see any fast green dot moving towards you, you run fast the oposite direction. Your ship can outrun all other enemies except the dynamis as said in the manual. You then use inertia to your advantage. As the enemy comes close to you you turn around the ship and shoot. While the ship due to intertia is moving forward the enemy is very hard to reach you. If You manage to kill the enemy all well. If You miss, You turn around again and keep flying fast to the opposite direction to come to a safe distance from the enemy. And then again the same thing. You turn Your ship and shoot at the enemy.

Fun game. Forgot to mention that there is a Raiders of the Lost Ark game on the Atari 2800. Yes really!

This was eventually my second-favourite game on the 2600 (H.E.R.O. was the best).

Defender is a timeless classic, you should try Archer Maclean's Drop zone & sequel Super Dropzone

If all humans are kidnapped, the planet is destroyed, the player remains in deep space with aliens attacking, swarming, the game usually end very quickly, thereafter.
