Ball Goes Around a Loop without Loosing Contact

How high must you release a ball so that it can go through a loop without losing contact with the track? What would the minimum height be? This video explains how to determine the drop height for a ball to go through a vertical loop without falling off the track. The problem is done algebraically first and then numbers are put in at the end to determine the height.

The fact that the only thing this depends on is the radius of the loop is kind of insane.

Hey Kenny! Just wanted to let you know that even after two years, your video still helped me ace my exam's niche question! Keep up the great work!

there's actually a small mistake in the potential energy for the ball at the top of the loop.
the height of its centre of mass is at y = (2r1 - r2), so the expression should be Ug = m*g*(2r1-r2) + Kl * Kr.
