This performance stands out in a recording session that was full of pretty much univerally standout songs. Los Lobos are an American treasure.

I feel sorry for anyone who is not aware of how great Los Lobos is.

The American Epic sessions are fascinating; who else had the balls to resurrect an almost 100 year old recording system and actually USE it?

This is beautiful music. Born in the Midwest to parents from Monterrey, Nuevo León, I feel deeply connected to the music, the folklore and the history of the Son Jarocho. The music is a fusion of Spanish, Indigenous and African influences. The traditional dress the women wear during festivals harkens back to my family’s Spanish and Indigenous roots. I feel deeply connected to it.

Spanish
El Cascabel
Yo tenía mi cascabel
con una cinta morada,
con una cinta morada
yo tenía mi cascabel.

Y como era de oropel,
y como era de oropel
se lo di a mi prenda amada
para que juegue con él
allá por la madrugada.

¡Ay como rezumba y suena!
ay como rezumba y suena,
rezumba y va rezumbando,
rezumba y va rezumbando
mi cascabel en la arena.

*Anoche por la ventana
platicando con mi amor,
platicando con mi amor
anoche por la ventana,

*me dijo que le cantara,
me dijo que le cantara
el cascabel por menor,
y que no me dilatara.
me lo pedía de favor.

¡Ay como rezumba y suena!
ay como rezumba y suena,
rezumba y va rezumbando,
rezumba y va rezumbando
mi cascabel en la arena.

Bonito tu cascabel,
vida mía, ¿quién te lo dió?
Vida mía, ¿quién te lo dió?
bonito tu cascabel.

A mí no me lo dió nadie,
a mí no me lo dió nadie,
mi dinero me costó,
y él que quiera cascabel
que lo compre como yo.

¡Ay como rezumba y suena!
Ay como rezumba y suena,
rezumba y va rezumbando
rezumba y va rezumbando
mi cascabel en la arena.

English translation
The Bell
I had a bell
with a purple ribbon
with a purple ribbon
I had a bell.

And because it glittered
and because it glittered
I gave it to my beloved darling
so she can play with it
until the morning.

Oh how it shakes and rings!
oh how it hums and rings
it shakes and it's shaking
it shakes and it's shaking
my bell in the sand.

Last night by (her) window
I spoke with my love
I spoke with my love
last night by (her) window.

She told me to sing
she told me to sing
with the bell in minor key
and not to take long
she asked me that favor.

Oh how it shakes and rings!
oh how it hums and rings
it shakes and it's shaking
it shakes and it's shaking
my bell in the sand.

Your lovely bell,
my dear, who gave it to you?
my dear, who gave it to you?
your lovely bell.

No one gave it to me
no one gave it to me
I bought it with my money
and whoever wants a bell
let them buy it like I did.

Oh how it shakes and rings!
oh how it hums and rings
it shakes and it's shaking
it shakes and it's shaking
my bell in the sand.

This song figures on the album that was sent outer space in 1977 on the space probe Voyager.

Hey mister! I don't mean to be tellin' tales out of school, but there's a feller in there that'll pay you ten dollars if you sing into his can.

A shame he never released these recordings in 78 rpm form

This is referred to as "traditional" which implies it's very very old in origin and has no known author.  NOT SO! It is a composition of Lorenzo Barcelata in late 1930's or early 40s.  The sound is traditional.  The show America Epic is great, I bought DVD. But the producers should have given credit to the song's composer.
