How to Split or Divide Salvia

Here I show you how I successfully split my perennial salvia plant. Mine got very overgrown and the stems were not able to support the weight of the foliage. So I chopped it down, dug it up, and split it into 4 new plants. I replanted one of the splits and gave the others to some family and friends.

Ooh, imagine the amount of cuttings you could have gotten with the cut off foliage!

So glad I watched this! I have 2 that are huge and flopping over in the center. Wasn't 100% sure if they could be divided. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you! This was so helpful and exactly what I needed. I have several overgrown and "falling" salvia. I love your quick, easy videos!

Thanks -good to know this technique when my salvia get overgrown, I think you can also divide hostas that way. I just deadheaded some salvia and I threw the spent flower heads into a sunny spot in the back garden on the off chance that they may self seed. From your experience do you think that I may get some new plants in that spot ?

Hi. I'm curious if all the 'new' clumps survived since dividing and replanting them?

When is a good time of year to split salvias?

so if I want to grow a row of flower spikes that shoot straight up without the "blooming onion" look like the one at the beginning of this video, I just need to divide it into pieces, and plant them somewhat spaced around each other, because the many little plants will result in that straight up growth versus one big one will cause the leaning spikes with the balding look in the middle.

Very helpful! Our salvias look like big flowered doughnuts after the recent heavy rains and are probably due anyway for division. You posted this only a couple weeks ago with a plant in full bloom -- does that mean it's okay to dig up, split and replant now, or should I wait for a cooler time of the year when all the blossoms are spent? We're southeastern WI, zone 5a. Thanks!

Did it make it back before the end of the season? I have deadheaded mine over the past couple of weeks and am now afraid they’re not getting enough sun as not much sign of new flower growth yet.

Did that plant originate from one seed/plant? Amazing how big things can get!

What variety is that? May I know the name? Would love to plant some in my garden.

Need to do this to mine. Did you end up fertilizing after replanting or just water??

Is Salvia the same as violet profusions & how long does it take to rebloom again after you split it up?

How long did it take for the sage to grow back to about 1-2 feet?

Hi
Is it too late to split my lavender? 90° out

Do you think that english lavender would also survive being split like that?

I read that falling over like that is a sign of not enough water or too much water or they aren't getting full sun, too much shade.

~⚪ Actially sometimes an indendation in the flora like this is a sign of a nest for fowl or other animal species ~
