After 46 years we're still discovering how he did it.

i never realized that double upstroke was just two different fingers going in one motion, thats really clever

Knophler was a beast. Making a technique that’s not easy look as such is the mark of a great guitar player.

OMG. That's how he did it. Middle finger. Wow. I got the finger picking and the solos down years ago, even the double stop vibrato, blocking my right hand against the trem bridge for double stop bends - but I could never get the strumming. No way to power through the rhythm without being too heavy and slow. Hours watching the old grey whistle test slowed down. So simple but genius. It was probably done without thought. Just natural for Mark.

Now this how you do a guitar lesson. No talking. Clear footage of what’s important for the particular technique. All shown in less than 1 minute, yet it provides hours of potential practice depending on the viewers skill level. Great job!

It’s by far the greatest guitar riff/progression ever written. Nothing hits harder than Sultans. Literally nothing. Not whole lotta love. Not Hey Joe. Not Pride and Joy, not Thunderstruck, not master of puppets. Not even eruption. Sultans literally chord progression and feel defines the feeling of a late September driving or the day to day life of going to and from work. It’s INSANE.

Of the dozens of lesson videos on Sultans of Swing, I’ve never seen someone cover the subtlety of the rhythm part. That double upstroke is critical, thanks so much for sharing!

Mark was one of the underdogs of guitar, he played with lots of greats like Chet akins. And yet people dont give him as much credit as he deserved

Does the strat have to be red for this to work?

Roy Clark was a legend at finger picking. He was an absolute beast on anything with strings

most helpful information! Played it in bar bands all my life, and I never knew that this is how it was done! Always used a flat pick. Much Thanks to you!

If I can and will only learn one complete song, it's this one

Mark knopfler, one of the few guitarists in the world to play rock electric guitar without a pick. A true Master 👌

Amazing. I've been playing this song on the guitar for decades, but I never noticed Mark playing it like this. I appreciate you. Thank you so much.

Amazing rhythm…👌👌 feels like western music, a cowboy riding a horse galloping down the valley and disappearing into the sunset 🌅
