Magnus Carlsen just shocked Hans Niemann by playing a new opening vs Hans at the 2024 speed chess championships!

Of course Magnus Carlsen is famous for inventing new openings, but this new chess opening is so insane that even Magnus Carlsen himself was likely shocked by it!

The opening novelty in this game occurs on move 4 with the move 4.d3 - a normal looking move for White, but one played by Magnus Carlsen in a completely new chess position making this a new chess opening! It's simply unbelievable how Magnus Carlsen continues to invent new openings in his games, but here he pulls it off vs Hans Niemann!

I like how you don't go too deep into the analysis. And the "platypus" name is awesome

After 1, 500 + years it is highly unlikely there is such a thing as a new opening in chess. Maybe rare but not new someone out there has already tried and either liked it loved it or lost because of it.

3:50 Hits bishop. But, also traps the knight. Two birds with one stone move.

this is not actually an "opening". if you must call it an "opening", it must be called the "troll opening"

This a Colorado-Defence (1.e4 Nc6 2. Nf3 f5?!) with colors reversed and the extra-tempo a3, avoiding Bb4. Makes sense.

Back when I was learning strategy, I would sometimes "throw" the first game by making less than optimal moves just to see what would happen. Usually, I lost, but sometimes neither I nor my opponent foresaw the situations that led to my victory.

Why not “the Carlsen Variation of Anderssen’s Opening?”

I liked it. I call it "Freestyle Chess", (not based on historical, but inventive.) It is where all new advancements some from, right? And this is a game of infinity (near as any game can be). I have a new opening that I have no developed at all to speak of. I was just able to beat my rough computer game with it the first time i used it. It did not know what to do, and i was just guessing. Push the rook pawns up fast, and open up those powerful rooks to the action near the center of the board. Maybe just one of you don't want to give up a castle, but that extra move can be helpful if you don't castle. I see all kinds of opportunity with free rooks earlier in the game, stuff that history would not know how to defend. I found they can get trapped if you are not careful there, but that is power never before seen in a early game opening, and they will not know what to do if it is somebody who thinks outside of the historical box, and does not call anything they have never seen "crazy", in a game of infinite choices.

To the YTber....an easy move is an easy move. Find it yourself and do not try to make an easy move incredible because it is not.
