Lex on this show has always been interested in Lana Lang, he didn't start dating her until he started having beef with Clark Kent, almost like he did it hurt clark because that was his high school sweet heart, or she was the spoils of war. Lex was the type to follow teachings from the 48 laws of power, Sun Zu the art of war, and Napoleon.

I don’t think it was awkward. She went to Europe to gain confidence and find herself. I feel like Lex’s greeting was affirming that for her, and her response was almost a thank you for noticing. They embrace as friends. He encouraged her trip to Europe before she went And told her he was there if she needed anything.

I don’t know what Tom was talking about lex and Lana hated each other since they left in good term since he was there at the airport when she went to Paris. It’s Clark who shined by his absence.

It was in line with the character relationship.

Lex had told her before she left for Paris that he bought her the cafe because he was romantically interested in her (*cough*grooming*cough*), and he'd had her come to his place every week to "look at the books". So he had established himself with her.

Lana craves male attention like a crack addict, so of course she enjoys it, him being an alpha male and all.

In this season, she has not one, but two guys on the back burner as she has a relationship with Jason. That's what she likes.

These kinds out things only stand out when your isolate that specific thing and point it out. The narrative flow of a show or a movie and the investment into the plot from the audience usually negates innocuous dialogue like this.
