Engaging with the industry by going to events, workshops, party's and so on is only going to work for you if you are genuinely interested in the event itself. If you are there only to get connections or the next role your energy will push people away cause you are needy. That's why the best networking is done out of passion.

Really enjoyed what you had to say. So on point. No matter what happens, congratulations on being "on hold" for the TV show. This business can be pretty crazy. I had 15 auditions for the Netflix show House of Cards. Was on hold for a few, but never booked. On the 15th audition, I booked a recurring role. Really hope the projects comes through for you.
