Lukozer Retro Game Review 170 - Damocles - Commodore Amiga

My review of the Amiga game Damocles, released by Novegen in 1990. Paul Woakes' classic sequel to the great Mercenary was extremely late, but well worth the wait. This game isn't particularly video friendly so this review may not show it in a great light and I don't come close to showing everything this game has to offer, but it is simply magnificent. The game is VAST and yet comes on a single floppy disk and doesn't require any additional disk accessing once the game has loaded... putting many other Amiga games (Midwinter 2 in particular!) to shame, to say nothing of most modern PC games...

I was obsessed with this game! I had a 'copy' of it (ahem), I never realised there was actual charts that came with the bought product until I saw your video. I remember I made my own charts, can't really remember why I drew them or what they looked like! my memory aint so clear as it is 26 yrs ago! anyway, thanks for the memories :)

RIP Paul Woakes, creator of this game and its mercenary predecessor

Well done, Lukozer, you took one of the greatest early games for the Amiga and managed to make it look DULL. I know there's tons to do, but you should've summed up more concisely what the game was about, and why it was so compelling to play. You didn't even prepare beforehand with the charts, which are needed. Lastly, you didn't even leave Eris and show some of the other planets, to show this sheer scope of which you mentioned. Unless people look elsewhere for more footage of this classic game, they're gonna think you're just overexaggerating. Yes, this game is classic, but your review here is wanting.

Man I used to love this game when I was a kid! It has general relativity in the mechanics of the game so you can travel across space, but by the time you have got back the clock has ticked forward considerably.

Superb. I was expecting Part 1 to 150 on this game, but the introduction was very welcome. The way you explain the story makes total sense, but in the game it reads like its never going to make sense. Are the triggers always in the same locations, so you could go around to them all and get to the end part quickly? I love the fact this game is shockingly fast, and this proves the stock Amiga can throw around filled vector graphics at lightning speed. Makes me wonder what the hack happened with Robocop 3. As for Mercenary III, the JimPlaysGames channel has that one covered. Like you he ended up covering a lot of ED recently.

Speaking of which, best of luck selling your licence. I have a feeling ED wont be a great game for some time to come, but the new update is in beta next week, with horizons the week after, so with new commodities, planetary ports and base attacks, planetary mining and new ships, I have a feeling its going to hold my attention for some time to come. Deep down I actually still like the game a lot. Plus I'm in no rush to complete it.

Another prime specimen from the 16-bit era. I've only played it a little. The sheer scale of the game is somewhat intimidating.

For some reason I remember a game very similar to this but also involved travelling between planets. Can't think if it was on the Amiga though
