This video brings you the comprehensive introduction and relation of queer theory (gay lesbian theory) with cultural studies. As this is a new segment in the revised syllabus of NTA-NET/JRF English, I have tried to give some of the key points related to the topic so that it us easy for all the NTA-NET/JRF aspirants to comprehend the concept of the cultural studies.
Queer Theory or studies is an attempt to define the sexual preferences and identities. It seeks to find a cultural and political space where the homosexual is no longer considered a perverted, unhygienic, immoral or sick Other of heterosexuality. Queer Theory is a significant contributor to the Cultural Studies and is closely aligned with social and political movements and activism. If we talk about its history in 1969 police raided the Stonewall Tavern in the city of New York. Many lesbians, gays and transvestites, transgenders fought back. The battles and the riots ensued. And they received wide popularity globally. The first ever meeting of the British Gay Liberation Front took place at the London School of Economics on 13 November 1970 and the first Annual Gay Pride march was conducted on 1st April 1972. Since then the movement has not looked back and it has received by a wide acclaim, popularity and support globally. The Gay Liberation movement has always sought to fight the social, economical, religious or medical oppression and it has always sought to find a niche or space, cultural and political space in the mainstream society and since then they have always tried to locate a political and cultural space for the thus marginalized community in the mainstream society. They have always fought for the recognition by the community at large. Gay and Lesbian theory or Queer Theory assumes that assumes that the sexuality or the sexual preferences or orientation play a very vital role, a very prominent role in the construction of social identity.
