Who Owns Antarctica? | International Breaking News
Antarctica stands out from just about anywhere else on Earth. Sure, it's the windiest, coldest, driest, and least inhabited region. It is covered in thick layers of ice making it very inhospitable to most animals. It also accounts for nearly one tenth of our planet's land.
Given its size and mankind's general pattern to maximize as much geographical control as possible, it may come as somewhat of a surprise that Antarctica is actually jointly controlled by 12 nations today. As outlined by the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, 12 countries hold joint sovereignty over the region. Since that treaty's signing, a few dozen other countries have joined the pact as well. The basis of the Antarctic Treaty maintains that the land must be used cooperatively and there must be a sharing of scientific discoveries. This means no military activity or nuclear programs. There's also an environmental ban on mining and drilling. That policy, though, only lasts through 2048.
International Breaking News is committed to answering the smart, inquisitive questions people have about life, society, politics and anything else happening in the news. It's a place where curiosity rules and together we'll get a clearer understanding of this crazy world we live in.
