Crystal Gayle - The Sound of Goodbye (1983). Lyrics in description. From the album "Cage The Songbird".

We kissed goodnight
And we turn out the light
And we lay side by side in the dark
And we're waiting for sleep or a spark

But the night's on the run
And the spark does not come
And we quietly worry and wonder
And the silence is louder than thunder
And it rings with the sound of goodbye

It rings with the sound of goodbye
I can't even tell you just why
It may be the truth or it may be a lie
But it sounds like the sound of goodbye

We can talk of the weather
We can talk of the news
We can talk of the talk of the town
There's another true love going down

We can talk about promises, talk about lies
But there's no use pointing our fingers
And the sound of 'I love you' still lingers
But it rings with the sound of goodbye

It rings with the sound of goodbye
I can't even tell you just why
It may be the truth or it may be a lie
But it sounds like the sound of goodbye

Time is forever
But love is a fire
And one day is one degree colder
And the clock's tickin' over your shoulder
And it ticks and it ticks, and it ticks and it ticks...

And it ticks with the sound of goodbye
I can't even tell you just why
It may be the truth or it may be a lie
But it sounds like the sound of goodbye

Sound of goodbye
I can't even tell you just why
It may be the truth or it may be a lie
But it sounds like the sound of goodbye

Another lost 80's song that you don't hear anymore. I sure miss them.

Why, as a 53 year old male, does listening to lodies like this still bring a tear to my eyes?
Knowing that music like this will never be along again in this continuum! So sad.

When I was a kid my dad listened to the local country station and there was this one song I really liked but I had no idea who it was and it didn’t get on the radio that much. Maybe once or twice that I could remember. Being from Long Island which isn’t a hotbed for country popularity, we lost our station and that was that. I spent years trying to figure out what song it was and then I found this maybe a year ago and realized it was Crystal and it was this song.

I am a huge fan of 80's country music and came across this great song. I think today if the radio played this many people would still love it. Very catchy and beautiful voice.

Great song from my teenage years. It was a hit here in Australia in 1983 - 1984.

A #1 hit for Crystal Gayle on the Country & Western charts. It was the 688th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. I saw Crystal on May 25, 1987 (Memorial Day) at Busch Gardens Amusement Park in Willamsburg, VA. She opened for The Charlie Daniels Band.
