Early Bird Antique & Vintage Flea Market Bargain Shopping!

The semi-annual "big" flea market is on this weekend, and I'm going early to find the freshest antiques and vintage for my collectors! We get to the flea market in Greenville, Kentucky at the crack of dawn, where dealers are still setting up after an overnight rain delay. Will we see the best stuff first, or is it all still packed in their vehicles?

The answer (for us) is to make the rounds a few times while the sellers dry out and put out all their stock! We head to the vendors out on the edges of the field first, figuring they're the folks we don't see here the rest of the flea market season. A huge row of $1 tables, a massive collection of old gas & oil signs, a storage cleanout reseller and a yard sale all live out on the edges of this market, and we start finding the goodies right away...a fab 50s boudoir lamp, a $5 Murano bowl and a hanging shelf that needs much cleaning but costs just $1 are the first things we take back to the car!

The shopping just gets better as more dealers and more shoppers arrive, and we find everything from Treasure Craft pottery and a striped Pyrex bowl to 1930s toothbrush holders and vintage costume jewelry as we peruse! The mainstay vendors here bring out their best for this show too, and we explore everything from 1950s western movie posters and a strange woodman's machete to MCM glass and real frontier powder flask as we comb this place for things we can sell at our shows this summer!

The bargains pile up, and we pick up the best looking antique steamer trunk we've ever seen, then take it back to review the haul. We're sure happy with what we find! Our total spend of $240 has potential to intrigue a lot of different collectors visiting our booth, and we figure (conservatively) we'll sell it all fast for around $750. I'm not a morning person, but this flea market makes it worth getting up early!

Hi George! 👋
Had to pause to comment before i forget...lol
I wonder if Boy Scout Memorabilia will go up in price with the new name change to Scouting America in feb 25. Might be a good time to prospect before everyone thinks about it.
We still have to have yearly inspections on our vehicles in Maine. And going back to the beginning, as a young girl my Mom brought home a steamer trunk like yours but it was pink and pretty. Since our old house had only 2 closets, my sisters in the bunks shared a big dresser and i got the steamer for my clothes. It felt really special. I also slept on spring cot that could be folded out to sleep two. It was so comfy. And we shared the room until i was a teenager. My 3 older brothers eventually made the attic into their cave and i got a room that myself and my littlest brother who was under 5 and only went there to sleep, shared.

27:19 We had a Caloric when I was kid. Gas stovetop that died of old age eventually. Or rather, one burner control died and it was so old we couldn't get parts. The KI railroad lantern was probably a shortline. I don't know it, and my dad would have taught me. If it was K&T it was Kentucky and Tennessee. I found a little lapel pin from a LA/TX shortline once, in a random lot. Paid $10 for the lot. The pin sold for over $300 in an online auction. Stuff from the line was rare and collectors were rabid. So... if you find marked shortline pieces, nab 'em.

Love the steamer. My mother toted her fathers from 1926 until it gave way in 2000. Thank George! 😊

Hi George
Just FYI, it’s 2024 and the Commonwealth of PA still uses that sign and still inspects all vehicles yearly. Very expensive.

Great trunk ! Colors remind me of Bayberry brand (spell). Though, it is more distinctive. Nice find, the early bird caught the worm 😊

I have my half uncles trunk from WW2. He was killed overseas in Germany . It’s not fancy, but it’s history .

Hey George. That was a nice flea market, with many interesting items. There were a lot of items there that caught my eye. I would've likely bought a few of them, too. Thanks for the take-along!
