A new Chinese airliner may soon take to the skies. It's called the C919 -- and it looks a lot like Boeing's 737. As Kris Van Cleave explains, development of the jet may have been assisted by espionage.

China gives companies a choice. If you want access to their citizens wallets, you give their companies what they want. US and European companies made their choice, chasing after short term profits at the expense of allowing a competitor to grow in the long term. Don't turn around after reaping the short term profits and cry foul after the fact. These companies knew what they were getting into and made the choice to acquiesce to China's demands

I didn’t know you could walk like a “737”, quacks like a “737” then turns out to be an Airbus lookalike. Typical BS media reporting.

Tell me one thing that an other country does that is not considered a threat to the US!!
If I get it right so, only the US has the right to develop everything in this world?

Real suspicious how a passenger jet looks exactly like a passenger jet

When you can't compete, you start accusing your opponent. I always thought plane should look all the same.

‘Forced technology transfer’…. So now we’re meant to feel sorry corporate greed.. pretty sure they weren’t ‘forced’ to make that contract

If any eastern nation rises to power, US sees it as a security threat . India should keep it in mind.

"Dominate the global air space and drive its competitors out of business"- typical business plan

It doesn't resemble a 737 anymore than an A320. The US is just unhappy that there may be new competition.

US once "borrowed" rocket designs from germany along with their most prominent engineers and used their technology and skills to build missiles and conquer the moon. Seems that Chinese had a great deal of inspiration.

To be honest I would rather fly the Chinese rookie plane than a Boeing now.

Boeing and Airbus refusing to supply maintenance and repair parts for jets sold to Russia has made the Chinese investment in a new domestic airline a pressing national security issue.

Its not forced. You didnt have to transfer the technology. You did it because you agreed it was a profitable transaction for now.

It's nothing like the 737, the MAX is not a very good example to copy...If anything it is based on the Dornier 728. This design was bought by COMAC out of their insolvency years ago. The engines are supplied by GE, the LEAP-1C. C standing for COMAC. Just a normal business transaction.

Wouldn't it be true that any country that started to design a plane would eventually end up with a design that is similar to all the other top performers ? There are only so many ways to design an aerodynamic/fuel efficient airplane. Also are we meant to work under the assumption that US/European companies don't dabble in a bit of corporate espionage ?

The US is shaking in its boots when it sees a shadow of a 5-star flag.

I thought the Chinese was going to unleash a low cost domestic airline in the United States to compete against Spirit and Frontier
