How to build a floating mantel for a fireplace

Since I couldn’t salvage the mantel that was there, I needed to make my own! I cut my boards to the length I needed, then I set my blade to 45° to cut a beveled edge on the ends of my boards. Once I finished my cuts I used wood glue and brad nails to assemble the mantel. I used Minwax Early American for my stain. To hang the mantel I first rested it on a 2x4 and used brad nails (temporarily) so I could make sure I had it set where I wanted. I then went in with 3” screws to secure it to the wall.
