A rotary encoder, also called a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft or axle to an analog or digital signal.
There are two main types:
1. absolute
The output of absolute encoders indicates the current position of the shaft, making them angle transducers.
2. incremental (relative).
The output of incremental encoders provides information about the motion of the shaft, which is typically further processed elsewhere into information such as speed, distance and position.
in this tutorial the rotary encoder will be used with arduino uno and we will be writing a basic arduino program to demonstrate its use.
The same program can run on Mega as well. but make sure you use the same pins on mega as well. if you use different wires then simply change the pins in mega program and that's it.
