**Here’s how to read a petition/complaint in Texas.**

When you get sued for debt collection in Texas, you receive 4 documents: the petition, citation, the accounting of the debt, and the original contract.

PETITION DOCUMENT
In Texas, the petition document begins the lawsuit. The plaintiff, usually the debt collector, files the petition with the court.

The petition lays out why you are being sued and the general details of the case.

CITATION DOCUMENT
Once the plaintiff files the petition, they get a citation for the case. Then both documents are served on you.

The citation (summons in other states) notifies you that you are being sued and tells you you only have 14 days to respond.

--You only have 14 days to respond or you automatically lose your case--

ACCOUNTING DOCUMENT
Debt collectors are required to include an accounting of the debt. This will show how they arrived at the number they are suing you for.

ORIGINAL CONTRACT
They will also include the original contract from where the debt began. If they don’t include it, request it.
