There’s a book series I read when I was a teenager called Pendragon, and in the fourth book, there was a realm they were trying to save that was a deserted and dystopian world that had these pyramid-like mega centers where people are just hooked into a virtual reality program called Lifelight. The food supply was pretty much just an injection of synthetic paste due to society’s abandonment of reality and was just barely enough to sustain everyone. Everyone was pretty much addicted to Lifelight and when pulled out of it, they would go crazy.

The entire plot of that book was centered around destroying Lifelight in order to save the society of that world from the brink of collapse. Super crazy how close to reality that book might actually come to.
